"You are the light of the world!"
These words, adapted from Matthew 5:14, remind us in a fun way that, although our light may be shining, “something kind of crucial” is lost if we don’t bring the light we have out into the world, for all to see, for the glory of our generous God and the building of the kingdom.
This past year, we have seen that light demonstrated joyfully in our own parish:
+ In amazing energy creating our new Closet on-the-Hill thrift shop
+ In our joyous worship and all those who share gifts of the Spirit
+ In our Sunday School; in our awesome confirmation class; in Adult Lenten study, Education for Ministry, and Engaging God's Word; in the Book Club
+ In our care for our Church and Rectory properties, especially our successful 'Windows into Our Future' campaign and renovation
+ In our service to our community through Sstarbirth, Mobile Loaves & Fishes, Church Beyond the Walls, the Hope Alzheimer's Center, Grannie's Attic, and so much more!
It is time again to pray about your contributions of time, talent, and treasure to God.
For many years, St. David's took substantial funds from endowment savings for operating purposes, depleting them significantly. Five years ago, our Vestry voted on crucial Sustainability Goals, reducing these withdrawals each year. In 2020 we will no longer draw operating funds from our savings.
Last year, people pledged $130,000. We need $160,000 to meet our operating expenses and to maintain current ministries. As a result, we must increase our giving by $30,000.
Although this seems like a large number, with 65 pledging units, this means an average increase of $461 per year per pledging unit, or an approximate increase of $9 per week per pledge. We also seek and invite new members to our church family who may, as able, contribute to our budget.
Pledging represents the majority of funding for St. David’s operating budget, and it allows us to have a home for the many ministries and outreach efforts we conduct, as well as the gatherings we celebrate with each other. As with any organization, we have ongoing needs that require dependable funding: Clean, secure, and accessible facilities for those who visit our church and rectory for worship and events; wages and benefits for our staff; offices, materials, and technology for church operations.
We have the ability within our church family to build a healthy and sustainable budget and provide a secure future for St. David’s.
When we bring our light out into the world, we express our gratitude, confidence, and willingness to take risks as agents of Jesus remaking the world.
Jesus said, "You are the salt of the earth." Indeed, our work, our prayers and our giving are all about making God’s flavors, colors, and love visible and available to all in our lives. And they are about our willingness to accept the challenge to stretch and grow, into our individual purpose, and into the mission of our church.
Let us reflect on the gifts we have received, and to consider how God is calling us to risk “flavoring” the world with our time, talents, and treasure, and let us join together to give abundantly to bring light into our lives and the world around us.
